Regional lender Firstmost Bank confirmed Tuesday that it had assessed a customer a thirty-five dollar overdraft fee, followed by a second thirty-five dollar fee categorized internally as an Emotional Reconciliation Charge. The customer, who had been overdrawn by one dollar and ten cents on a coffee, reportedly raised his voice at a teller, which triggered the second fee automatically.
A bank spokesperson explained that the institution had simply listened to its customers, who consistently said they wanted to feel something when they banked. The bank added that the fees help fund the lobby's complimentary pen, which remains chained to the counter for everyone's protection.
Asked whether the policy was legal, Firstmost said its terms of service ran to ninety-four pages and that the customer had agreed to all of it by continuing to exist near the building.
