Health Insurer Denies Claim for Injuries Sustained While Opening Denial Letter

Paper cut deemed out of network because it occurred at the kitchen table.

By Marcy Tran, Consumer Desk · Filed July 16

GoldCare United confirmed Wednesday that it had denied a customer's claim for a paper cut sustained while opening the letter informing him that his previous claim had been denied.

The insurer explained that the injury occurred outside the customer's network, specifically at his kitchen table, and was therefore not covered. A spokesperson noted that the customer could appeal the decision by opening a second letter, the contents of which were also a denial.

The company added that it remained committed to its members' health, a commitment it demonstrates by making contact with members as difficult as possible. Premiums will rise twelve percent next year to fund the envelopes.
